Cold wave tightens grip across Valley

According to the MeT office in Srinagar, the prevailing conditions are likely to persist until December 3. However, a brief spell of rain and snowfall is expected across the valley from December 3, it said.

The cold wave conditions have further intensified across the Kashmir Valley, with minimum temperatures plummeting to minus 4.5 degrees on Friday, accompanied by dense morning fog and a cold breeze in the morning.

 

According to the MeT office in Srinagar, the prevailing conditions are likely to persist until December 3. However, a brief spell of rain and snowfall is expected across the valley from December 3, it said.


Most hill stations in Kashmir received early snowfall, causing a further dip in minimum temperatures. Jammu city remained the warmest place with 9.4 degrees, while Zojila pass remained the coldest with minus 16 degrees recorded on Thursday night.


While daytime temperatures have remained relatively moderate across Jammu and Kashmir, nighttime temperatures have plummeted below freezing point across most weather stations.

 

According to the MeT officials, “The summer capital, Srinagar, recorded a minimum of minus 4.5 degrees Celsius on Friday, accompanied by cold northerly winds.”

 

In central Kashmir, temperatures also fell several degrees in Budgam and Ganderbal, recording a sharp decline over the past two weeks.

 

Meanwhile, South Kashmir’s Shopian, Pulwama, Kulgam, and Anantnag also witnessed a sharp dip in minimum temperatures, ranging from minus 6 degrees to minus 6.7 degrees. While Srinagar Airport recorded minus 6.4 degrees on Friday.

 

Qazigund, known as the gateway to Kashmir, also recorded minus 4.4 degrees, while several other weather stations across north Kashmir, including Baramulla, Bandipora, and Kupwara, witnessed chilly night temperatures.

 

In the Jammu division, the weather remained relatively moderate, with Jammu city recording 9.4 degrees Celsius, while Banihal, Kishtwar, Bhaderwah, and Batote also experienced slightly milder weather conditions.
