A community radio station (Radio Anly) in Ladakh is bringing news and entertainment to the remote hamlets of the region, fostering a new sense of inter-community connectivity. Radio Anly is providing entertainment to six remote hamlets of Hanle, located close to the India-China border.
Besides entertainment, the radio station offers weather updates, programmes for the local community, and the latest Bollywood buzz. The station serves as a vital link for information on government schemes, new Bollywood releases, and other forms of musical entertainment. It broadcasts in the local Ladakhi, Hindi, and English languages.
Started in November 2024 under the Indian Army’s Operation Sadbhavana, CRS Anlay 89.6 MHz—with the tagline ‘JahanSitare Mile’—is run by a staff of four: a station manager, a sound engineer, and two jockeys.
Station manager KunzangDisket said, “We four locals have been engaged here since the CRS opened. This station has an important role to play in bridging the gap with the outside world, as All India Radio transmission is not very good here.”
She added that the station features programmes on a range of subjects, including government schemes, weather updates, and agriculture-related information. “We are also focused on Ladakhi culture and its preservation. We have a very rich heritage. Specialities of Hanle, such as dark sky gazing and its monastery, are also highlighted. Important events in the area as well as nearby parts are covered,” Kunzang added.
Covering a radius of about 10 km and the six hamlets that constitute Hanle, CRS Anlay’s programmes are mostly in Ladakhi and Hindi, with some in English as well, she said. Radio jockey at the station Tsering Lamo said that since the inauguration, the station has become quite popular among both youth and elders.
The local and Hindi language programmes are meant to cater to the residents, while English broadcasts are aimed at tourists visiting the area. The radio transmission starts at 9 am and continues until 6 pm every day.
