Barely few days after Adani group chairman Gautam Adani met Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on investment issues, Adani Power is once again in news in Jharkhand.
Congress Legislature Party leader Pradeep Yadav, who brought up the concerns of farmers during the Budget Session of State Assembly, met Soren on Monday and discussed the ongoing hunger strike by the protesting farmers against Adani Power in Godda district.
The CLP leader urged the CM to take prompt and necessary action on the issue.
Yadav criticised the Adani Power Plant for treating the people of Jharkhand unfairly. He claimed that while workers from Bihar, West Bengal, and other states earn salaries in lakhs, locals from Jharkhand are hired through outsourcing and paid only Rs 15,000.
Yadav stated that such discriminatory practices would not be tolerated under any condition. He said he presented these concerns to the Chief Minister, who promised to address the matter soon.
Speaking to the press outside the CM’s residence, Yadav pointed out that none of Adani Power’s earlier commitments—like setting up a hospital, opening a school, or providing jobs to displaced residents—have been fulfilled.
He warned that if the issues remain unresolved, a protest will begin on the 14th of the month. He questioned the fairness of paying outsiders over Rs 1 lakh for the same work that locals are doing for a fraction of the amount.
He also criticised Godda MP Nishikant Dubey for defending the company and ignoring the farmers' problems, which need serious attention and resolution.
Meanwhile, Adani Power Jharkhand Limited (APJL) announced that the second unit of its 2x800 MW Godda Ultra-Supercritical Thermal Power Plant officially began commercial operations on June 26, 2023, in Godda district.
Yadav’s renewed focus on the Adani plant gained relevance after Gautam Adani met with CM Hemant Soren on March 28 at his residence.
Reacting to this, Jharkhand BJP spokesperson Avinesh Kumar Singh remarked that Congress leaders have become uneasy ever since the meeting between Soren and Adani. He added that the BJP’s developmental agenda and successful implementation of welfare schemes are hard for the Congress to accept.
