The Haryana Congress Disciplinary Action Committee (DAC) is set to prepare a report and convey its decision to the party high command regarding the alleged cross-voting by five Congress MLAs in last month’s Rajya Sabha elections.

The committee, chaired by senior leader Dharampal Malik, met at the Haryana Congress office on Friday evening.

The five MLAs are accused of cross-voting in favour of the BJP-backed independent candidate. Satish Nandal has been issued a show-cause notice for “anti-party activities” by deliberately not supporting the Congress official candidate.

Polling for the two Rajya Sabha seats in Haryana was held on March 16. The party has named five legislators for defying the whip: Jarnail Singh, Renu Bala, Shalli Chaudhary, Mohammad Illyas and Mohammad Israil.

Three of the five MLAs — Chaudhary, Bala and Singh — have denied the allegations, claiming their names were wrongly dragged into the controversy and that they voted for the party candidate.

Only two of the accused, Bala and Jarnail Singh, replied to the show-cause notice, DAC chairman Malik said after the meeting.

“They requested a personal hearing. They came; we listened to whatever they had to say,” he added.

The Congress DAC will now finalise its report and submit its recommendations on the future of the legislators to the high command.

On the remaining two MLAs who did not reply to the notice, Malik said, “It means they have accepted the allegations against them.”
