Congress MLAs led by Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa staging a walkout from the Punjab Assembly on Friday.

The Punjab Assembly witnessed unruly scenes on Friday with Congress MLAs staging a walkout over the Abohar businessman’s murder.

As the proceedings of the second day of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha special session began, Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa raised the issue of murder of businessman Sanjay Verma in Abohar on July 7 by three assailants, demanding a discussion on the incident. Stating that since it is a special session and there is no zero hour, Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan told Bajwa that they would get ample time to raise their issues. Upon this, Bajwa and other party MLAs rushed to the well of the House and protested against the law and order situation in the state.

Meanwhile, Speaker Sandhwan has extended the ongoing session by two days on the recommendation of the House Business Advisory Committee.

After the Congress MLAs came back to their seats, heated exchanges erupted between Cabinet Minister Harpal Singh Cheema and Congress leader Bajwa after the AAP leader alleged that the Congress had patronised gangsters. Bajwa claimed that he was not allowed to reply to Cheema's allegations and, along with other MLAs, again reached the well of the House, raising slogans against the state government.

The Speaker asked the protesting Congress MLAs whether they have anything to say about the House Business Advisory Committee recommendations. However, they did not reply and staged a walkout.
