The Uttarakhand Congress, led by Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Ganesh Godiyal, staged a protest in Dehradun on Tuesday night. The party alleged that the state government stopped trucks carrying equipment for Rahul Gandhi's 'Chhatron Ki Goonj' programme.
The event is scheduled to be held at Parade Ground in Dehradun on July 17. Party leaders said they had received permission to use the venue, but the administration later stopped the vehicles from entering and cancelled the clearance.
Speaking to reporters, Godiyal accused the state government of trying to prevent Rahul Gandhi's interaction with students. He claimed the government was uneasy about the message Rahul Gandhi planned to deliver to the youth.
"We showed the media the permission we had received; we displayed that permission, yet the government has now revoked it. The simple fact is that this government has been rattled and shaken by the message Rahul Gandhi conveyed to the students," Godiyal said. He also alleged that the government was using the administration to target the opposition and silence public voices.
"The government is creating difficulties for students, common people and the opposition. It should remember that such actions do not last forever, and one day it may have to face the same situation," he added.
Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, is expected to visit Dehradun on July 17. During the visit, he will interact with students and young people as part of the nationwide 'Chhatron Ki Goonj' campaign.
The campaign aims to highlight issues affecting students, including alleged exam irregularities and concerns related to the country's education system.
Rahul Gandhi launched the campaign in Kota, Rajasthan, with the 'Chhatron Ki Goonj Maha Rally'. The Dehradun programme is the next leg of the nationwide outreach.
