AICC general secretary Kumari Selja said efforts are being made to divide society on the basis of religion and caste, but the Congress will continue its fight to protect the Constitution and the rights of the people.
In a statement issued here, Selja said the Congress ideology has always stood with the poor, farmers, labourers and marginalised sections of society.
She alleged that attempts were underway to weaken the Constitution and asserted that the Congress’ struggle to defend it would continue at every level — from the streets to Parliament.
She said the Constitution drafted by B R Ambedkar is the soul of the nation and that any attempt to undermine it must be firmly resisted. Selja said the Congress remained committed to building a strong, inclusive and just India for all citizens.
Raising concern over the rural poor and workers, the AICC general secretary said welfare schemes such as MGNREGA were being systematically weakened.
She said MGNREGA had played a crucial role in providing jobs in rural areas and preventing migration, but budget cuts and reduced workdays were now affecting the livelihoods of poor families.
On the issue of redefining the Aravallis, the Sirsa MP said the hill range was closely linked to environmental balance, water conservation and the future of coming generations.
She expressed concern over rising mining activities and alleged neglect of environmental norms, urging the government to take strict action in the matter.
Targeting the BJP over alleged crimes against women, Selja referred to cases such as Unnao, Hathras and the Ankita Bhandari murder case in Uttarakhand, alleging that justice had not been delivered to the victims.
She accused the BJP of attempting to protect its leaders and said slogans like ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ ring hollow without justice for women.
Selja said justice must be ensured in all such cases and accused BJP-ruled states of shielding those responsible.
