A senior Congress leader and his son were hacked to death late on Saturday night in Nakashipara, Nadia district. The incident took place when they were on their way back home. According to police, Anisur Rahman, a serving member of the Pradesh Congress Committee and General Secretary of Nadia district, and his son Abu Sufian were intercepted while returning from nearby Bethuadahari. Armed assailants allegedly opened indiscriminate fire on their vehicle before attacking them with sharp weapons, leaving both dead on the spot.
Anisur was an active political figure, and his Sufian was a law student. The attackers spared neither, raising serious concerns about the nature and intent of the crime.
Local residents suspect that the killings may be linked to a deeper political conspiracy and an ongoing struggle for dominance in the area. Sources indicate that a local leader, Jubbar Sheikh—who once held significant influence over the Harnagar Panchayat area—had switched allegiance from the CPI(M) to the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and is currently in judicial custody. Following his imprisonment, Anisur’s influence and the organisational presence of the Congress in the area had been on the rise.
This shift in local political dynamics has led to speculation that the murders could be a calculated move tied to control over political turf. Locals have further suggested that Sufian may have been killed to eliminate a key eyewitness, as he was present during the attack on his father.
However, the identities of the perpetrators and the exact motive behind the killings remain unclear. Police have launched an investigation and are examining all possible angles, including political rivalry.
Soon after news of the incident broke, leaders from the Nadia District Congress rushed to the scene. The area remains tense, with fear and uncertainty gripping residents.
