Congress MLA from Manglaur in Haridwar district, Qazi Muhammad Nizamuddin, has written to the Director General of Police of Uttarakhand expressing concern over recent incidents of violence in the hill state that were allegedly based on religion. In the letter sent on Thursday, he referred to cases such as the reported mistreatment of a Muslim man who was offering prayers in a field and the alleged assault of a truck driver in Haridwar.
The legislator said that no one is above the law. He requested the DGP to ensure a fair and impartial probe into these incidents. He also called for strict action under relevant legal provisions and proper safety and protection for the victims. In the letter, Nizamuddin said Uttarakhand’s identity is built on peace, communal harmony and the rule of law, and these values must be protected at all times.
The letter further stated that, “In recent days, several incidents of communal violence and abuse have been reported from different parts of Uttarakhand, which is extremely worrying. In one case, an elderly Muslim man was allegedly assaulted and abused while he was offering namaz in a field. In another incident, a Muslim truck driver was reportedly beaten on the basis of religion in Haridwar.”
He added that such incidents not only raise serious concerns about law and order but also harm social harmony, mutual trust and constitutional values in the state. Violence or harassment against any citizen because of their faith, identity or community is totally unacceptable. The repeated occurrence of such incidents is creating an atmosphere of fear and insecurity in society, and it needs to be addressed immediately.
The letter also said that the police should take serious cognisance of these incidents and ensure prompt and impartial investigations. FIRs must be registered under strict legal provisions against those responsible, and strong legal action should be taken against them. At the same time, full protection and dignity must be ensured for the victims.
The MLA also urged authorities to take effective steps to prevent such incidents in the future so that law and social harmony remain strong in the state. He expressed hope that the matter will be treated with priority and necessary action will be taken.
