Congress MP Rakibul Hussain was attacked with a cricket bat by a group of unidentified individuals in Assam’s Nagaon district on Thursday, police confirmed. The shocking incident took place in Natun Bazar, Rupahihat, while the MP was traveling on a two-wheeler to attend a party workers' meeting.
A viral video of the incident shows one of the attackers striking Hussain with a cricket bat before fleeing. Meanwhile, other assailants, their faces covered with black cloth, attacked his personal security officers (PSOs). In response, one of the PSOs fired warning shots into the air, forcing the attackers to disperse.
Despite the violent assault, Hussain escaped unhurt, thanks to the swift intervention of his security team. However, two of his security personnel sustained injuries.
Authorities have yet to determine the reason behind the attack. The Congress party has demanded a thorough investigation into what they call a serious security lapse.
Leader of Opposition in the Assam Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, criticized the state government, stating, "The chief minister claims law and order have improved, yet an MP is not safe on the streets. This attack must be thoroughly investigated."
Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Harmeet Singh confirmed that Mr. Hussain was rescued by his security team and is safe. However, the attack raises concerns over security for public representatives.
Mr. Hussain, a five-time MLA from Samaguri, won the Dhubri Lok Sabha seat in the last elections with a record margin of over 10 lakh votes. His son contested the Samaguri Assembly bypoll but lost to BJP candidate Diplu Ranjan Sarma. The bypoll saw several violent incidents in the constituency and surrounding areas last November.
With tensions still simmering in the region, authorities are investigating whether the attack was politically motivated or linked to recent electoral events.
