Congress MP being probed for Pakistan links, says Assam CM

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday revealed that a sitting Congress MP and his family are under SIT investigation for suspected links with Pakistan, including unauthorised travel and financial connections. The inquiry may be handed over to central agencies if it extends beyond state jurisdiction.

A sitting Congress MP from Assam and his family are under investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Assam Police for suspected links with Pakistan, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Thursday.

Addressing the media in Guwahati, Sarma said the MP and members of his family have been summoned for questioning between June and July as part of an inquiry into alleged travel and financial ties with Pakistan.

According to Sarma, the Congress MP had travelled to Pakistan via the Atari land border and stayed for 15 days without informing the central authorities. “He avoided air travel and chose the land route to evade official scrutiny,” the Chief Minister said.

He described the unauthorised visit as “a serious violation of protocol” and suggested that the MP’s actions appeared to be deliberate attempts to conceal the nature of his travel.

The Assam Police SIT has also uncovered evidence indicating that the MP’s wife, while residing in Delhi, received a salary from Pakistan over a period of three consecutive years.

“We have credible statements backing this claim,” Sarma said, emphasising that the financial trail was central to the investigation.

In addition to the Pakistan visit, the MP reportedly travelled to Nepal during the same period. Sarma labelled the trip “clandestine”, noting that it was not connected to any public or official engagements.

He added, “Given the heightened activity of Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI in Nepal during that period, we are examining whether there is a link between the two visits.”

The SIT is expected to complete its investigation and submit a report by September. However, Sarma indicated that if the scope of the case surpasses the state’s jurisdiction, central agencies may be roped in.

“The Assam Police will conduct a thorough probe. If necessary, central agencies will be brought in to ensure a comprehensive investigation,” he said.

While the Chief Minister refrained from naming the MP in question, his remarks have caused ripples across political circles in Assam and beyond, with Congress yet to issue a formal response.
