Weeks since Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Shaktisinh Gohil resigned after the party fared badly in the recent Assembly bypolls, the Congress has appointed senior leader Amit Chavda as the new state unit president.
The party also appointed former Union Minister Tushar Chaudhary as the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader in the Gujarat Assembly, replacing Chavda in that position.
"Congress president has appointed Chavda as the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee president, with immediate effect. Congress president has also sanctioned the proposal for the appointment of Chaudhary as the Congress Legislature Party leader in Gujarat, with immediate effect," KC Venugopal, AICC general secretary (organisation), said in a statement.

"The party thanks the service of PCC president Shaktisinh Gohil, who is leaving office," the statement further added.
Gohil resigned following the Congress's inability to win either of the two Assembly constituencies that were contested in the bypolls last month. He was appointed GPCC president in June 2023, ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. In response to his appointment, Chavda tweeted: "This is not just a post — it is a sacred duty to fight for every Gujarati and embody the values the Congress Party stands for." He went on further to say, "As a dedicated party warrior, I will work day and night to strengthen @INCGujarat, fulfill the aspirations of our people, and convert the vision of @RahulGandhi ji into an action plan in Gujarat."
