The Congress is set to win all four municipal corporations in Himachal Pradesh as the party is in a strong position everywhere, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said on Friday.

Sukhu, while addressing a rally in Solan on the last day of campaigning for urban local body elections, said the BJP is facing internal divisions. He also claimed that Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur is under pressure as the party may remove him from the post.

Polls for 51 urban local bodies, including four municipal corporations of Solan, Mandi, Palampur and Dharamshala, along with 25 municipal councils and 22 nagar panchayats, will be held on May 17.

He said municipal corporation polls will be fought on party symbols, while municipal council and nagar panchayat polls will be held without party symbols.

Sukhu said some rural areas were added to Solan Municipal Corporation when it was formed. He added that if people of these areas wish to be excluded from the municipality limits, they will be de-merged from the corporation's territory after the polls. He also said overhead electricity wires in Solan market area will be shifted underground.

Blaming the BJP for increasing fuel prices, Sukhu said petrol and diesel rates are being hiked while the Prime Minister is talking about austerity, which could affect government revenue.

Sukhu said public spending is important because higher purchases lead to more GST collection and increased revenue for the government. He said rising fuel prices will affect everyone and urged people to think carefully before voting in the municipal corporation elections.
