In a shocking incident in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district, a Congress worker was brutally beaten to death, leading to the arrest of five individuals.
The incident occurred on Wednesday night near the victim’s house in Hathat Colony, under the Khargrabari-1 gram panchayat of Maynaguri.
The victim, Manik Roy, was allegedly tied to a tree and assaulted by a group wielding iron rods and sticks.
According to the police, the attack stemmed from a dispute with his neighbours.
Roy’s family and the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC) president, Adhir Chowdhury, accused members of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of being involved in the murder.
Manik Roy had been forced to leave his home after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections due to threats from TMC-backed individuals, according to his family and Congress supporters.
He had relocated to Siliguri town, where he worked as a security guard. On Sunday, he returned home, only to face the fatal attack days later.
“Roy started to stay in Siliguri town where he worked as a security guard. Last Sunday, he returned home. But TMC-backed goons tied him to a tree and beat him up. This is the ruling party’s terror in Bengal,” said Congress worker Soumya Aich Roy.
In response to the incident, the police arrested five suspects on Thursday.
WBPCC president Adhir Chowdhury called for a fair probe, condemning the violence against Congress workers in TMC-ruled West Bengal.
“It seems that Congress workers have no right to pursue political activities in TMC-ruled West Bengal. We want a fair probe into the murder of Roy,” he stated.
The incident has sparked a political storm, with the Congress accusing the TMC of planning and plotting violence against its members.
TMC, on the other hand, has denounced any attempts to politicise the issue, pressing the need for a thorough investigation.
“It is an unfortunate incident and none of those involved should be spared. Any attempt to politicise this should be denounced,” stated TMC leader Kunal Ghosh.
