The secretary of the Nangal Khurd Krishi Seva Sahakari Sabha, located in the Haroli area of Una district, has been booked for allegedly embezzling Rs 9 crore, the police said on Monday.
The accused, Vijay Singh, a local resident, was suspended in August 2024 after a routine audit of the cooperative society uncovered financial discrepancies. The audit report revealed irregularities amounting to several crores, prompting the Cooperative Department to launch a detailed investigation.
A two-member inquiry committee was formed, comprising District Auditor Officer Sandesh Bala and Inspector Umesh Kumar Sharma, who also holds the additional charge of the Gagret block. Following the findings, Singh was suspended under Section 69(1) of the Co-operative Societies Act, 1968.
During the departmental inquiry, Singh reportedly admitted to the embezzlement and repeatedly sought time to repay the amount. However, after failing to meet the final repayment deadline of March 10, a formal complaint was lodged by Inspector Sharma.
Superintendent of Police Amit Yadav confirmed on Monday that a case has been registered and an investigation is currently underway. According to Sharma, the accused has not only defaulted on the repayment but is also refusing to cooperate with the authorities during the inquiry.
The Nangal Khurd cooperative society case has drawn attention due to its scale, especially given the historical significance of the region. Notably, the cooperative movement in India began in Panjawar village of Haroli in 1892, underscoring the longstanding legacy of cooperative institutions in the area.
