Corbett Tiger Reserve has launched ‘Operation Monsoon’ to stop poaching during the rainy season. Though the reserve remains closed to tourists in monsoon, forest staff are fully active on the ground. The annual drive is meant to protect both the reserve and the adjoining Kalagarh Division.
The operation starts with the arrival of the monsoon and is aimed at keeping a close watch on the forest despite heavy rain, broken roads and poor connectivity. Officials say the difficult weather often creates extra challenges for patrolling teams.
Forest teams are carrying out long foot patrols, covering around 120 to 150 kilometres. Vigil has been stepped up in all six ranges of the Kalagarh Division. To improve surveillance in tough terrain, the authorities are using all-terrain vehicles, elephants and drones.
Monsoon is an important period for the forest as greenery returns and many wild animals enter their breeding season. That makes protection even more important, as officials try to safeguard biodiversity and prevent illegal hunting.
