Two persons were injured after their car veered off the Bhowali-Ramgarh road in Nainital district, Uttarakhand, and plunged about 50 metres into a gorge. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) launched a rescue operation and brought both passengers to safety, officials said.
The accident took place near Kulati Bend when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The car rolled down a deep gorge, leaving the occupants trapped inside.
After receiving an alert from the Nainital District Disaster Control Room, an SDRF team led by Sub-Inspector Manish Bhakuni reached the spot with rescue equipment and began the operation.
The rescuers located the vehicle nearly 50 metres below the road. The occupants were identified as Kharesh Duggal and his wife, Ritu Duggal, both residents of Noida. They suffered minor injuries in the accident.
The SDRF team safely pulled the couple out of the gorge, provided first aid on the spot and later shifted them to Bhowali Hospital for further treatment.
Earlier this week, a separate road accident in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district claimed two lives after a truck plunged nearly 100 metres into a gorge on the Tarsali-Phata road. The mishap triggered a joint rescue operation involving the SDRF, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), district police and fire services.
Officials said the Rudraprayag District Control Room received information about the accident late on Thursday night near Tarsali in the Phata area. Soon after, an SDRF team from Sonprayag, led by Sub-Inspector Ashish Dimri, rushed to the scene with specialised rescue gear.
The SDRF, along with the NDRF, district police and fire services, conducted the rescue operation. Using ropes, the team climbed nearly 100 metres down the steep gorge to reach the damaged truck.
Rescuers found two people lying unconscious near the vehicle. They were brought up on a hardboard stretcher and handed over to the 108 ambulance service. Doctors examined both victims after they were taken out of the gorge but declared them dead, the SDRF said.
