A day after the CBI detained Srinagar resident Shafat Ahmed Shangloo for reportedly being involved in the 1989 kidnapping of Rubaiya Sayeed, a special TADA court in Jammu set him free on Tuesday. Rubaiya Sayeed is the daughter of the then Union Home Minister and former J&K chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.
The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Madan Lal rejected the CBI’s request for custody in the 36-year-old case. The kidnapping was done by JKLF terrorists, including jailed leader Yasin Malik.
CBI lawyer SK Bhat said the court examined the chargesheet and found no evidence against Shangloo. Shangloo later told the media the court had done justice by freeing him.
His lawyer Sohail Dar said his client would not remain under investigation because no evidence was found.
Rubaiya, who now lives in Tamil Nadu, was kidnapped from outside Lal Ded Hospital in Srinagar on December 8, 1989. She was freed after the Central Government released five terrorists in exchange. In 2022, she identified Yasin Malik, now in Tihar Jail for a terror funding case, as one of the accused.
