The Shimla District Committee of the CPM has strongly criticised the Centre for arresting Ladakh activist Sonam Wangchuk and has sought his immediate release. The party announced it will hold a protest outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Shimla on October 1 and submit a memorandum to the Central Government through the Governor.
Along with Wangchuk’s release, the party has also called for the unconditional withdrawal of all cases against protesters, protection of democratic and constitutional rights, acceptance of the movement’s genuine demands, and Ladakh’s inclusion under the Sixth Schedule.
In a statement, CPM district secretary Vijender Mehra said Wangchuk’s arrest was an attack on democratic rights. He pointed out that Wangchuk, who has been leading the struggle for Ladakh’s statehood and Sixth Schedule status, was detained under the National Security Act (NSA).
“This move has exposed the authoritarian face of the Central government and its disregard for the genuine aspirations of the people of Ladakh. Instead of fulfilling the promises made to the people of Ladakh, the government has resorted to repressive measures to crush a democratic movement,” he said.
