Mamata and Abhishek Banerjee convened an emergency meeting of TMC councilors amid fears of dissent and political uncertainty within KMC.

Meeting with councilors amid mounting political uncertainty, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and TMC’s General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee have stepped in to directly address growing unease within the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), following the aftermath of the recent Assembly election results.

An emergency meeting has been convened at Kalighat on Friday at 4:00 pm, bringing together all TMC councilors. According to party sources, attendance has been made virtually mandatory, underlining the seriousness of the situation. The leadership is expected to assess the mood within the ranks, address grievances, and prevent any potential cracks within the municipal body.

The urgency of the meeting comes against the backdrop of rising speculation regarding internal dissent and fears of a possible split among councilors. These concerns have intensified after the party’s loss of power at Nabanna, the state secretariat, with the ripple effects now reaching the civic body headquartered on S.N. Banerjee Road.

Adding to the political intrigue, the KMC’s scheduled monthly session, which was to be held on Friday, has been postponed indefinitely. The sudden decision has fueled speculation that the ruling camp is attempting to avoid a formal session amid fears of dissent surfacing publicly.

Despite the TMC holding a commanding majority in the KMC—controlling 137 out of 144 wards—recent electoral trends have raised concerns. Post-election analyses indicate that several councilors failed to deliver expected leads in their respective wards, while the BJP has reportedly made significant gains in key areas.

Political observers suggest that the shifting electoral dynamics have triggered anxiety within sections of the ruling party, with speculation rife that some councilors may consider switching allegiances. While no official statements have been made, the convening of the Kalighat meeting has only intensified such discussions.

Further compounding the uncertainty are unconfirmed reports surrounding the possible resignation of Mayor Firhad Hakim. Though Hakim has not publicly addressed the rumors, speculation about his future has added to the tension within party circles.

As the situation unfolds, all eyes remain on Friday’s meeting at Kalighat. The political messaging from Mamata and Abhishek, their ability to contain dissent, and any clarity on the leadership within the KMC are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the next phase of Kolkata’s municipal politics.
