A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan went on a shooting spree at a camp in Manipur on Thursday night, killing two colleagues and injuring eight others before turning the gun on himself.
A preliminary investigation by CRPF authorities suggests that the attack by jawan Sanjay Kumar stemmed from a personal dispute.
The incident occurred around 8 pm at the CRPF’s Lamphel camp.
“In an unfortunate incident, tonight at around 8 pm, a suspected case of fratricide happened inside a CRPF camp in Lamsang under Lamphel West District, wherein one CRPF jawan opened fire, killing two of his own colleagues on the spot and injuring eight others. Later, he also died by suicide using his service weapon. The personnel belonged to F-120 Coy CRPF. Senior officers of the police and CRPF rushed to the spot,” the Manipur Police said in a statement on X.
The injured jawans were rushed to a hospital for treatment.
“It seems the jawan was in distress. We are investigating whether he was unhappy with his posting in trouble-torn Manipur or had been denied leave by his superiors,” said a police officer.
The incident comes amid heightened security across Manipur, following the imposition of President’s Rule on Friday, two days after N Biren Singh resigned as Chief Minister. The army has been deployed outside Kangla Fort in Imphal.
