Inspector General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) PK Sharma said on Saturday that every possible measure has been taken to ensure a secure and peaceful atmosphere in Srinagar, as the Third CRPF Cricket Tournament kicked off in the city.
Speaking to reporters, the IG said the tournament has been organised annually since 2023 in November–December with the aim of engaging youth and promoting a sports culture.
“Around 123 teams from Srinagar, Baramulla and Ganderbal showed interest this year, but due to time constraints, a draw was held and sixteen teams were shortlisted,” he said.
The tournament is being organised in collaboration with the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association, with grounds provided by the University of Kashmir.
Highlighting the enthusiasm and love for the sports, Sharma said, “We had to keep age restrictions to ensure more involvement of players below the 19 and 23 categories.”
“Kashmir has enormous cricketing talent and enthusiasm. Through sports, we want to strengthen peace and harmony and connect positively with the youth,” he added.
Responding to a query on the prevailing security situation in Srinagar, the IG said the CRPF, along with J&K Police, the Army and the civil administration, is working jointly to maintain peace.
“I don’t want to go into much detail since today is a sports event, but from our side, every possible measure has been taken,” he said.
He said that the force has been serving in the region for the past 35 years and that cooperation from the people continues to grow.
