Curfew-like restrictions continue in Leh on Saturday.

The curfew-like restrictions continued on the fourth day, Saturday, in Leh town after climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was detained under the National Security Act (NSA) on Friday, officials said.

Wangchuk was detained on Friday for inciting the violence in Leh town on September 24, which resulted in the death of four people and the injury of more than 90 people. Subsequently, 40 police personnel were also injured in the incident.

The internet services were also snapped in Leh as part of precautionary measures.

Wangchuk has been part of the five-year-long agitation demanding statehood, extension of the Sixth Schedule, and protection of land and jobs in the region.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has blamed Wangchuk for inciting the recent violence. His arrest came a day after the MHA cancelled the FCRA registration certificate of the Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL), an organisation founded by Wangchuk.

This was the first detention under the National Security Act (NSA) in Ladakh since the region was separated from the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.

The last rites of the two persons killed in the security forces' actions during the Leh violence, which saw protesters burning down the BJP office and several private vehicles, will be held today.

Shops and business establishments were shut in the Kargil district of Ladakh as soon as the news of Wangchuk’s arrest under the NSA spread.

The district administration has imposed Section 163 in Kargil to restrict gatherings. The situation in Leh and the surrounding areas has remained peaceful but tense since the violence erupted on Wednesday.

Acting tough on anti-social elements and miscreants, Ladakh Police had lodged multiple FIRs and detained over 50 rioters as the police initiated action against those who instigated the violence in Leh town.

Meanwhile, a team of MHA officials held a meeting with the representatives of LAB and KDA in Leh yesterday.
