Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Cr PC, imposed in Manipur’s Jiribam district since June 6 due to potential disruptions following the alleged killing of a 59-year-old man, has been eased within the Jiribam Municipal area from 9am to 1.30pm on June 19.
The order, issued by additional district magistrate Th Manoranjan Singh on Tuesday, permits easing of movement within Jiribam Municipal area from 9am to 1.30pm on June 19.
The decision, based on a letter from Jiribam superintendent of police (SP), aims to facilitate public access to essential items like medicines and food. However, gatherings, protests, or rallies of unlawful nature remain restricted during this period.
Violence erupted in Jiribam district after the alleged killing of a 59-year-old farmer on June 6, near the Assam border.
Despite being home to diverse communities, Jiribam had previously avoided the ethnic strife affecting other parts of Manipur.
Since May last year, Manipur has grappled with ethnic tensions between Meiteis and Kukis, resulting in over 200 deaths and displacement of more than 50,000 people.
Many displaced individuals continue to reside in relief camps.
