The Orang National Park and Tiger Reserve in Assam will cease all tourist activities from May 15 until further notice, marking the conclusion of the tourist season.

Authorities announced the closure of Jeep Safari and Elephant Safari services for visitors, effective May 15, as stated in a notice issued by the Divisional Forest Officer of Mangaldai Wildlife Division.

"The Jeep Safari and Elephant Safari for visitors/tourists in Orang National Park and Tiger Reserve shall remain closed with effect from May 15, 2024, for the tourist season 2024-25 until further notice," the notice specified.

This follows a similar decision by the Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve, where elephant safaris were halted from May 1 and Jeep safaris will cease from May 16.

The tourist season in Assam's national parks and wildlife sanctuaries typically spans from October to mid-May annually.

Orang National Park, situated on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra River in Assam's Darrang and Sonitpur districts, spans across 79.28 square kilometers.

Originally established as a sanctuary in 1985, it earned national park status on April 13, 1999.

Renowned for its diverse flora and fauna, including the iconic Indian rhinoceros, pygmy hog, Asian elephant, wild water buffalo, and Bengal tiger, it serves as a vital habitat for these species.

Notably, it stands as the sole bastion for the rhinoceros on the north bank of the Brahmaputra River.
