According to the Central Water Commission (CWC), six rivers in Assam and Manipur, including the Brahmaputra and Barak, are experiencing severe flooding, putting numerous districts at risk.

In Assam’s Jorhat district, the Brahmaputra at Neamatighat is flowing at 85.25 metres, 0.29 metres above its danger level of 85.54 metres.

The Barak River is also in a critical state.

At Chotabekra in Imphal East, Manipur, the Barak River is at 30.15 metres, which is 3.95 metres above its danger level, posing a significant threat to surrounding communities.

In Assam, the Barak River is affecting various districts.

At Badarpur Ghat in Karimganj district, the river stands at 18.13 metres, 1.28 metres above the danger level.

At Annapurna Ghat in Cachar district, it is at 21.52 metres, 1.69 metres above the danger level. Fulertal in Cachar district reports a water level of 25.94 metres, 2.06 metres above the danger level, indicating a steady trend.

Meanwhile, at Dholai in Cachar district, the water level is at 24.9 metres, 0.32 metres above the danger level, though it is showing a falling trend.

The Kopili River at Kampur in Nagaon district is also in a severe situation, flowing at 62.08 metres, 1.58 metres above its danger mark of 60.5 metres.

Although the trend is steady, the high water level remains a concern for the local population.

In Karimganj district, the Kushiyara River is at 16.5 metres, which is 1.56 metres above its danger level. This steady trend necessitates immediate action to mitigate potential flood damage.

The Katakhal River at Matijuri is flowing at 22.23 metres, 1.96 metres above its danger level, while the Dhaleswari River at Gharmura is at 28.18 metres, 0.13 metres above its danger level.

Although the water levels are falling, both rivers remain in a severe situation, necessitating continued vigilance.

Over two lakh people have been affected by the floods in nine districts of Assam following incessant rainfall in the aftermath of Cyclone Remal. Officials reported that since May 28, six people have died due to floods, rain, and storms in the state.

The affected districts include Nagaon, Karimganj, Hailakandi, West Karbi Anglong, Cachar, Hojai, Golaghat, Karbi Anglong, and Dima Hasao.

Road connectivity in Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi districts has been severely disrupted, with vehicles stranded due to a 20-metre stretch of National Highway-6 being washed away by heavy rain in the Lumshnong area of Meghalaya.

The relentless rainfall has submerged 3,238.8 hectares of crop area and affected 2,34,535 animals.

The Brahmaputra and Barak rivers, along with their tributaries, are flowing above the danger mark at various locations in the flood-hit districts.

A total of 35,640 people have sought refuge in 110 relief camps, with the highest number of 19,646 in Hojai, followed by 12,110 in Cachar, 2,060 in Hailakandi, and 1,613 in Karimganj.

The continuous rainfall and thunderstorms have brought life to a standstill in the three districts of Barak Valley and Dima Hasao.

Other affected districts have also reported intermittent rain and storms.

In response to the severe flooding, the state government and disaster management authorities are taking necessary steps to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected populations.

Meanwhile, troops from the Assam Rifles have rescued approximately 1,000 individuals from flood-stricken regions in Manipur, severely affected by relentless rainfall induced by Cyclone Remal.
