Cyber Police Kashmir has issued a stern warning against the deliberate circulation of false and unverified information by certain media outlets and individuals on social media platforms, terming it an intentional effort to incite unrest and disturb public peace in the region.
In an official statement, Cyber Police Kashmir said “It has come to our attention that some individuals and media platforms are engaged in spreading fake news and misinformation with malicious intent. Such acts are aimed at provoking unrest and disturbing public order.”
The statement further emphasized that legal proceedings will be initiated against those found involved in such activities under relevant sections of the law.“We caution all social media users, citizens, and media outlets to refrain from sharing unverified and sensitive content. Falling prey to false propaganda can have serious consequences. We urge everyone to verify facts before posting or forwarding any information that may jeopardize public peace and harmony,” the Cyber Police Kashmir added.
The department reiterated its commitment to safeguarding digital integrity and maintaining law and order in the region, while also urging the public to report any suspicious or provocative content to authorities promptly.
Taking to the microblogging platform X, the Cyber Police said it has noticed a troubling trend in the spread of misinformation. “It has come to attention that certain media outlets and individuals on social media platforms are circulating false and unverified reports, thereby creating deliberate attempts to incite unrest and disturb peace and public order,” the police said in the post.Authorities underlined that such activities will not be taken lightly and that punitive measures will follow.
“Legal action will be initiated against individuals and organizations found to be spreading false information/misinformation with malicious intent, under the relevant sections of the law,” the statement further read.The Cyber Police has urged the public, including media professionals and social media users in particular , to exercise restraint and responsibility before sharing sensitive content.
“We appeal to citizens, media platforms, and users of social media to not fall prey to false propaganda,” the statement emphasized. “Please verify facts before sharing anything that may potentially disturb public peace and harmony.”
The warning comes amid a rise in viral posts and speculative news stories that authorities believe could be exploited to stoke communal tensions or spread panic.
