Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced on Thursday that 1,600 of the 4,431 pregnant women relocated to health centres due to the threat of Cyclone Dana have successfully given birth.
Majhi revealed that the state has evacuated a total of 5,84,888 people to safety, with the number expected to surpass 600,000 by Friday morning.
“These evacuees are currently housed in 6,008 cyclone shelters, where they are receiving essential supplies such as food, medicine, and water,” Majhi said during a press briefing.
The highest evacuation occurred in Balasore district, with 172,916 people relocated, followed by Mayurbhanj with 100,000, Bhadrak with 75,000, Jajpur with 58,000, and Kendrapara with 46,000.
Majhi clarified that although the government initially aimed to evacuate 10 lakh people, the target was adjusted based on the cyclone’s changing trajectory.
"We have successfully evacuated all residents from high-risk areas," he said.
In his briefing, Majhi also informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah of the state’s preparedness and noted that the Centre expressed satisfaction with the response efforts.
Earlier, a woman from Cuttack district, who had been evacuated to Niali Hospital, gave birth to a healthy baby boy.
The state’s Information and Public Relations (I&PR) department announced the birth, stating, "Authorities ensured the safe delivery of the baby boy at Niali Hospital amid preparations for Cyclone Dana. Both the mother and child are in good health."
Disaster response teams continue to be deployed across affected areas, ensuring safety and medical care.
