Former Haryana chief minister and Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Friday criticised the BJP government over the law and order situation in the state, alleging that incidents of robbery, extortion, murder and firing have become common.
Referring to the recent Dadri incident, Hooda said the crime had created fear among people across Haryana. He alleged that the accused carried out the act near a police station, indicating a lack of fear of law enforcement. Citing the Social Progress Index, Hooda claimed Haryana had been ranked among the country's most unsafe states and held the state government responsible for the situation.
Responding to remarks by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on sports policy, Hooda defended the Congress government's record, saying it had introduced landmark measures for athletes. He said the Congress government directly appointed 17 medal-winning sportspersons as DSPs and announced cash rewards of up to Rs 5 crore for international medal winners. He also highlighted the launch of the SPAT programme to identify and nurture sporting talent among schoolchildren.
Hooda said Haryana athletes won 22 of India's 38 gold medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, which he attributed to the sports infrastructure and policies created during the Congress tenure. He alleged that the BJP government later diluted these policies, depriving athletes of promotions, jobs and other benefits.
Demanding recognition for athletes, Hooda urged the government to appoint all Commonwealth Games medal winners to senior positions such as DSP.
He also termed the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan a victory for protesting students and youth. On allegations related to theft of offerings at the Ram Mandir, Hooda sought an impartial probe and strict action against those found guilty.
