Darjeeling Toy Train hits record passengers and revenue in 2025–26, driven by tourism surge, service upgrades and revival of heritage steam engines.

The iconic mountain railway of the North Bengal hills has once again reaffirmed its timeless charm. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), fondly known as the “Toy Train,” has set new all-time records in both passenger numbers and revenue, marking a historic high in its 142-year legacy.

According to official data released by the DHR administration, the 2025–26 financial year witnessed a significant rise in tourist footfall and earnings. Passenger numbers climbed to 215,432, up from 183,003 in 2024–25—an increase of approximately 17.72 per cent. Correspondingly, revenue rose from Rs 2.21 crore to Rs 2.53 crore, reflecting a growth of around 14.71 per cent.

Expressing gratitude for the milestone, DHR Director Rishabh Chowdhury credited tourists for the railway’s renewed success. He noted that the popularity of the heritage Toy Train continues to grow steadily, drawing visitors from across the country and beyond.

The turnaround comes in the backdrop of a strategic shift following the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier reliant on subsidies, the railway administration moved towards making the heritage service self-sustaining after its recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Embracing this challenge, the DHR leadership introduced a series of innovations, including upgraded services and the revival of vintage steam engines and coaches—efforts that have quickly paid off.

Officials attribute the success to a balanced approach—modernising passenger services while preserving the railway’s historic essence.

“The Toy Train now offers a variety of services, all of which are attracting tourists. As passenger numbers rise, revenue is also increasing. We have several more plans in the pipeline to further enhance the experience,” Chowdhury said.

Looking ahead, the DHR is set to expand its offerings in time for the upcoming summer vacation season. Four new “Joyride” services are slated to operate along the popular Darjeeling–Ghoom route, a stretch renowned for its scenic beauty and engineering marvels.

In addition, a privately operated heritage service is expected to be launched between New Jalpaiguri and Tindharia within the year. Adding to the nostalgia, British-era steam engines will once again be seen chugging through the misty hills during the summer months—an experience that continues to enchant railway enthusiasts and tourists alike.

Often described as the lifeline and pride of the “Queen of the Hills,” the Darjeeling Toy Train remains more than just a mode of transport. With its latest achievement, it has reinforced its status as a living heritage—where history, tourism, and engineering brilliance converge on narrow mountain tracks.
