Trinamool Congress (TMC) General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee appeared before the CID’s Bhabani Bhaban headquarters on Tuesday, less than 24 hours after undergoing a marathon interrogation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the recruitment scam.
The Diamond Harbour MP reached the CID headquarters around 12 pm, complying with a summons issued over allegations of making provocative remarks during the campaign for the recently concluded 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
According to sources, a special investigation team comprising senior and experienced officers has been constituted to examine the intent and implications of Banerjee’s statements. Investigators have reportedly prepared a detailed questionnaire, and the TMC leader may face joint questioning by multiple high-ranking officials. His statement in the case is also likely to be formally recorded.
This is not Banerjee’s first appearance at Bhabani Bhaban. He had earlier visited the CID headquarters in connection with an investigation into the alleged forgery of a signature in the Legislative Assembly.
The present case stems from complaints regarding several controversial remarks made by Banerjee during the election campaign, particularly while targeting senior leaders of the BJP. One remark, referring to the playing of “DJs,” has drawn particular scrutiny. The complaint alleges that his tone, body language, and choice of words were provocative and amounted to a threat directed at opposition workers.
A case was subsequently registered, with allegations that the remarks contributed to heightened tensions and a deterioration of law and order during the election period. The investigation was later handed over to the CID.
Last Friday, CID officials had visited Banerjee’s ‘Shantiniketan’ residence in Kolkata’s Kalighat area to serve the summons, directing him to appear on June 16. In compliance with the notice, the Trinamool MP presented himself before investigators as scheduled.
With back-to-back appearances before central and state investigative agencies, attention now turns to Banerjee’s response during the ongoing questioning and its potential political ramifications.
