A young man was shot dead in broad daylight in the Peelkhana area under Golabari Police Station in Kolkata’s adjoining Howrah district on Wednesday morning, triggering tension in the locality.
According to police sources, two assailants arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire at close range while the victim was standing on a public road. The attackers allegedly fled the scene immediately after firing multiple rounds. The victim, identified as Soufiq Khan, died on the spot.
Police personnel reached the area soon after receiving information and began an investigation. Senior officers also visited the scene. CCTV footage capturing the incident has surfaced, and investigators are examining it to establish the sequence of events and identify those involved.
Akash Megharia, Commissioner of Howrah Police, said two suspects have been identified from the CCTV footage. The accused, named Rohit and Harun, are currently absconding, and search operations are underway. Police suspect that the murder may have stemmed from an old personal dispute.
Residents and members of the victim’s family alleged that a large sum of money had been demanded from Soufiq and claimed the killing was linked to that dispute.
Meanwhile, area MLA Gautam Chowdhury stated that there was no political angle to the incident and described it as the result of a personal conflict.
Police said the investigation is ongoing, and efforts are being intensified to apprehend the accused.
