Death toll in Assam floods rise to 56, 17 lakhs affected

The flood situation in Assam has deteriorated further, impacting over 16.70 lakh people across 29 districts as major rivers continue to overflow above the danger level.

 

An official bulletin on Thursday reported widespread inundation and issued an alert in Kamrup (Metro) district with the Brahmaputra, Digaru, and Kollong rivers surpassing the red mark.

 

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is scheduled to visit flood-affected areas in Maligaon, Pandu Port, and Temple Ghat in Guwahati Metropolitan area on Thursday to assess the situation.

 

Sarma chaired a meeting with all District Commissioners late on Wednesday night, directing them to be generous in granting relief, complete rehabilitation claims before August 15, and provide accurate information to headquarters to ensure adequate relief.

 

Cabinet ministers will camp in flood-affected districts for the next three days from Thursday, coordinating relief efforts and support.

 

The death toll from this year's flood, landslides, and storms has risen to 56, with three others reported missing. Severely affected districts include Barpeta, Biswanath, Cachar, Charaideo, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Golaghat, Hailakandi, Hojai, Jorhat, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, East Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, Karimganj, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, and Tinsukia.

 

Dhubri is the worst-hit district with over 2.23 lakh people affected, followed by Darrang with nearly 1.84 lakh and Lakhimpur with over 1.66 lakh residents suffering due to floodwaters.

 

The Brahmaputra river is flowing above danger levels at Nimatighat, Tezpur, Guwahati, Goalpara, and Dhubri.

 

Meanwhile, in Manipur, at least two people have died after drowning in the Senapati River.

 

The state government has announced the closure of schools until July 4 due to the flood situation.

 

The River Imphal breached its embankment at Singjamei Oinam Thingel in Imphal West, and the River Kongba overflowed at Kongba Irong and parts of Keirao in Imphal East.

 

The breaching of these embankments has necessitated the evacuation of over 2,000 residents.
