Dehradun Police on Friday recovered around Rs 1.55 crore in unaccounted cash from a Maharashtra-registered SUV during a checking operation in the Rajendra Nagar area. The recovery was made under ‘Operation Prahar’ by a team from Cantt police station, police said.
Acting on specific information, police intercepted an SUV on Sirmour Marg and recovered currency notes hidden inside a specially made secret cabin between the middle and rear seats of the vehicle.
The driver, identified as Satish Bhai from Gujarat’s Mehsana, initially failed to provide valid documents. Two other occupants, Thakur Jaswant Singh Banaji and Sachin Patel, both from Gujarat, were also arrested. During questioning, the driver admitted that the SUV was carrying a large amount of cash, a police officer said.
The Income Tax Department was immediately informed. A team headed by Assistant Director of Income Tax Pankaj Khatri reached the spot to carry out a formal search and prepare an inventory of the seized cash.
Initial inquiry showed the suspects were transporting the cash from Varanasi, the officer said. The driver claimed the money was meant for Jaswant, one of the co-passengers.
The suspects could not produce any valid documents or explanation for the cash, officials said. The Income Tax Department is now recording statements and verifying the exact amount.
Police have seized the vehicle and handed the case over to the Income Tax Department for further legal action.
