Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee offered his condolences following the fatal Delhi blast on Tuesday, whilst simultaneously launching a sharp critique of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for what he labelled as "grave lapses" in internal security. The blast occurred on Monday evening when a powerful explosion ripped through a slow-moving car near the Red Fort metro station traffic lights, resulting in the deaths of at least 12 people.

In a post on the platform X, Banerjee, the TMC's national general secretary, expressed that he was "deeply shocked and anguished."

"My heartfelt condolences go out to the bereaved families and my prayers are with those recovering from their injuries. It is extremely distressing that such an incident has taken place in the heart of our national capital," he wrote.

The Lok Sabha Member of Parliament argued that the Delhi Police, which falls under the remit of the Union Home Ministry, "bears the primary responsibility for maintaining law and order." He, further, questioned, "How, then, are such grave lapses in security being allowed to occur?"

Banerjee drew a parallel with the seizure of nearly 350 kg of explosives and an assault rifle in Faridabad, Haryana, on Sunday. He noted that the two incidents, when considered together, "raise alarming questions about internal security and the evident decline in vigilance."

He subsequently demanded a swift and unbiased inquiry, stating: "An impartial, time-bound investigation must be conducted by a Special Investigation Team (SIT), under court supervision if necessary, to uncover the truth and ensure that those responsible are held fully accountable."

Delhi Police have confirmed that the vehicle involved in the explosion had three occupants and are investigating the possibility that the attack involved a suicide bomber.
