Senior finance ministry official Navjot Singh, who was killed in a BMW crash near Dhaula Kuan here, was cremated on Tuesday in the presence of family members and relatives, even as police said the blood sample of the main accused, Gaganpreet, has tested negative for alcohol. The accused has applied for bail contending the 'incident was purely accidental'.
Singh's body was first taken to the Venkateshwar Hospital in Dwarka, where his wife is undergoing treatment for multiple injuries sustained in the accident. After the family members paid their respects at the hospital, the body was brought to his Hari Nagar residence and later, taken for the last rites.Singh (52), a deputy secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, was killed on Sunday afternoon when his motorcycle was hit by a BMW car while he was returning from the Bangla Sahib Gurdwara with his wife. While Singh died, his wife was seriously injured in the incident.
Amid his wife's allegation of deliberate neglect in opting some nearby hospital, the accused has denied contending in panic she could think of only the one where she took victims. Gaganpreet told police she took the victim to a hospital 19 km away because she was in panic and knew only that hospital. In her FIR, Navjot Singh’s wife said her husband was still alive after the accident and that she repeatedly begged the accused to take them to a nearby hospital, but Gaganpreet ignored her pleas.
A case has been registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 281 (rash driving), 125B (endangering life or personal safety of others), 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 238 (causing disappearance of evidence).Police said further investigation is underway to ascertain the sequence of events leading to the accident, including whether reckless driving was involved. They are also examining the CCTV footage collected from the stretch of the road and eyewitness accounts. The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team arrived at Delhi Cantt Police Station on Tuesday to investigate the seized car.Gaurav Ostwal, Scientific Officer, FSL, said that they are currently inspecting the car according to the protocols of the FSL. A complete analysis of the dent marks and scratch marks will be done. We can say anything after the analysis is done."
Gaganpreet Kaur, who has been remanded to two days' judicial custody, filed a bail plea claiming the crash was "wholly accidental" and unintentional.Her counsel highlighted that she is a mother of two minor daughters, has no prior criminal record, and sustained a head injury during the accident. It adds that Kaur has fully cooperated with the investigation, has deep roots in society, and there is no likelihood of absconding or tampering with evidence.
