Vehicles submerged on waterlogged roads after heavy rains lashed Delhi-NCR on Wednesday evening

Contrary to situation on ground level where life has come to a standstill due to rain triggered problems, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday said that despite heavy rains, the national capital did not witness waterlogging. She assured that the government is working hard to address issues in certain areas.

Delhi NCR was lashed by heavy rains on Wednesday evening and  in few hours majority of areas got submerged with underpasses and many wide roads witnessing knee deep level water . This clogged traffic and vehicles got stuck midway as water entered inside even in huge vehicles. CM Gupta made the statement after inaugurating DDA's Aarambh Pustakalaya at Adhchini Village in south Delhi here, along with Lt Governor V K Saxena.

"Delhi has begun a new journey. As you have observed, we conducted multiple inspections at Barapullah, Kushak Drain, and Minto Bridge. Despite heavy rainfall, there was no waterlogging, which was a legacy. This time, there was no such thing. ITO and Barapullah were smooth," she told reporters on the sidelines of the event.Gupta stressed that the government is working on improving conditions in a few areas."There are some areas where long-term solutions are needed. In the next year, the situation will be better during the rains. The government is working hard for this," she added. She mentioned only a couple of areas which might have witnessed less mess in comparison to past, but the fact remains rains as always choked everything on majority of roads in the national capital.

From ITO to Old Rohtak Road, Delhi-Jaipur highway (NH-8) and Madhuban Chowk, heavy traffic was reported for hours. The city struggled to drain excess water and manage vehicular flow. The Shadipur area saw a bumper-to-bumper jam till late afternoon, with motorists reporting delays of up to an hour.Traffic from Nangloi towards Najafgarh and vice versa came to a standstill. The Delhi Traffic Police in a post on X informed the public that traffic was affected on both carriageways from Nangloi towards Mundka and vice versa on the Rohtak Road due to waterlogging, potholes, and road/sewer repairing by the Public Works Department. Near Dhaula Kuan, Rajokri and Mahipalpur, vehicles were seen crawling for kilometres for hours.

"People are stuck for over 30 minutes just to cross a kilometre stretch," posted a commuter caught in the Zakhira jam. "The situation is extremely bad." Parts of south Delhi, including Sarai Kale Khan, the road leading to the AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital and the Ashram area, too, saw intractable snarls.

In Patparganj, a user wrote, "Due to the rain, many people are still stuck in traffic jams. In several places, vehicles are struggling to move forward." Commuters from Shalimar Bagh and Shahdara shared similar woes."Please have a look. We are stuck, and no one seems to be taking note," one user wrote, tagging the Delhi Traffic Police's handle. These posts deflated the claims made by the government with regard to relief this time.
