The Supreme Court has allowed the use of certified green firecrackers across Delhi-NCR on November 7 and 8, with strict limits on the hours during which they may be burst. The complete ban on firecrackers will come back into force from November 9.
Under the order, green firecrackers may be used only from 6 am to 7 am and from 8 pm to 10 pm on the two permitted days.
The court has also prohibited the bursting of firecrackers within 300 metres of hospitals, nursing homes, primary and district health centres, old-age homes and designated silence zones. These locations will be treated as “No-Cracker Zones”.
Authorities have been directed to identify and mark the boundaries of these restricted areas on the ground and ensure that the restrictions are widely publicised. The 300-metre prohibition will also cover educational institutions.
What are green crackers?
Green crackers were developed by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI). They are designed to produce around 30% less pollution than conventional firecrackers.
These crackers use lower quantities of certain chemicals, including barium and aluminium, and contain additives intended to reduce dust and smoke emissions. They are also designed to generate less noise, burn for shorter periods and release controlled flames.
