Delhi HC summons TMC leader Mahua Moitra & media platforms over defamatory suit

Delhi High Court hears defamation plea filed against TMC leader Mahua Moitra by her estranged husband Jai Anant Dehadrai.

The Delhi High Court issued summons to Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra in the defamation suit filed by lawyer Jai Anant Dehadrai for allegedly making defamatory statements against him on social media,  and print and electronic media. The hearing came on Wednesday.

Justice Prateek Jalan also issued summons to five media houses, namely, CNN News 18, India Today, Gulf News, The Telegraph and The Guardian as well as social media platforms X and Google LLC pertaining to the matter.

Additionally, the court further sought Moitra's response on her estranged husband Dehradai’s application seeking interim relief in the suit. The court has listed the matter for further hearing on April 08.

The suit also seeks to restrain Moitra from publishing any allegedly defamatory material against Dehadrai on social media.

A direction is sought upon the media houses and social media platforms to take down the defamatory contents from the internet and social media platforms against Dehadrai.

During the hearing today, Advocate Raghav Awasthi appearing for Dehadrai asserted that Dehadrai was losing his business as a lawyer due to the allegedly defamatory statements.

Dehadrai has sought damages worth Rs 2 crore from Moitra for the abusive and defamatory statements that she made against Dehadrai on various media outlets and social media platforms in connection to the cash-for-query row, alleging that he was “jobless” and “jilted”.
