VK Saxena Urges Review of Controversial Teacher Transfers.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena met with representatives of various government school teachers’ associations on Sunday to discuss recent transfer orders affecting teachers.

During the meeting at Raj Niwas, Saxena advised the Directorate of Education to take a fair and balanced view of these transfer orders. According to a post on the official X handle of Raj Niwas Delhi, Saxena has received numerous representations from different teachers’ associations, prompting this discussion.

The post emphasized Saxena’s commitment to improving service conditions for government employees to enhance their performance. He suggested that the Chief Secretary and Directorate of Education should consider the recent transfer orders with sympathy and fairness. Saxena also recommended that these orders be temporarily suspended while a holistic review is conducted.

This meeting followed a letter from Delhi Education Minister Atishi to Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar on July 4, in which she directed an immediate withdrawal of the transfer orders issued on July 2. Atishi also instructed a halt to any further compulsory transfers based solely on teachers having completed ten years in a particular school.

Minister Atishi highlighted that clause 16 of the circular mandated teachers who had served more than ten years in the same school to apply for a transfer.

Failure to apply would result in the Directorate of Education transferring them to another school. Atishi noted that nearly 5,000 teachers who did not apply for any transfer were transferred to other schools under this contentious clause.

Additionally, Atishi directed the Chief Secretary to initiate disciplinary proceedings against officers who willfully defied the directive dated July 1, 2024. She called for a vigilance inquiry into any corruption or malpractice related to the transfer of teachers.

This ongoing issue reflects the broader challenges faced by educators and the administration in balancing policy implementation with the well-being and stability of teachers.

The Lieutenant Governor’s involvement and the Education Minister’s directives aim to address these challenges, ensuring that teachers’ concerns are heard and addressed fairly.

As the Directorate of Education re-evaluates the transfer orders, the focus remains on fostering a supportive environment for teachers, which is essential for maintaining the quality of education in Delhi’s government schools.

The outcome of these deliberations and the subsequent actions taken by the Directorate of Education will significantly impact the teaching community and the overall education system in the city.
