A day after 14 persons lost their lives in a bus accident in Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh, Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri on Saturday ordered an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
Agnihotri, who also holds the transport portfolio, said an investigation has been ordered into the tragic road accident that claimed 14 lives and left many others injured.
He said the administration acted swiftly after the incident and that the injured are receiving treatment at various hospitals.
The accident occurred on Friday afternoon when an overloaded private bus, carrying more passengers than its seating capacity of 39, went off the road while travelling from Shimla to Kupvi and fell into a 500-foot-deep gorge.
The bus landed upside down near Haripurdhar village, about 95 km from the district headquarters at Nahan. Besides the 14 deaths, including eight women, around 52 people were injured in the mishap.
The exact cause of the accident is yet to be determined. However, local residents suspect the driver lost control of the bus, which then skidded off the road due to frost accumulation.
Officials said the injured are being treated at several hospitals, including Rajgarh Government Hospital, Nahan Medical College and Indira Gandhi Medical College in Shimla. Those with serious injuries have been referred to PGI Chandigarh.
