A deputy panchayat head was allegedly murdered in the Chadiyar area of Kangra district, police said on Thursday.
Ravi Rana, 40, son of the late Bhim Singh and deputy head of Chek panchayat, was found dead near his home around midnight on Wednesday. His body was found lying by the roadside.
Police said the victim had deep head injuries, indicating that he had been attacked and killed.
Initial investigation revealed that Ravi Rana had been consuming alcohol at a friend’s house in Chadiyar before heading home, when the incident took place.
Later that night, a villager passing by in his car saw a man lying unconscious on the roadside. When he stopped to check, he recognised him as Ravi Rana. To confirm, he called Rana’s phone, which rang at the spot, confirming his identity.
The villager immediately informed the panchayat head and others. Soon after, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Baijnath Police Station, Yadesh Thakur, reached the scene and took custody of the body.
Police have registered a murder case against unidentified persons. The body was sent to Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College and Hospital, Tanda, for post-mortem examination.
Senior police officers and a team of forensic experts visited the site where the body was found and collected evidence. Police also questioned several villagers to gather clues about the incident.
Ravi Rana was unmarried and lived with his elder brother after the death of their parents.
