DGP Swain slammed for remarks on political parties in J&K

J&K DGP RR Swain has been criticised for remarks that political parties were allegedly "hobnobbing with terrorists." (PTI/Files).

Mainstream political parties in Jammu and Kashmir have united to criticise DGP RR Swain's recent remark that regional parties were "hobnobbing with terrorists for political gains" following the Doda encounter on Monday.

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti vehemently demanded the DGP’s dismissal, accusing him of politicising the police force and targeting regional parties. “The DGP is busy fixing things politically and militarising the police force.

He is more into how to break the PDP and harass people,” Mufti stated.

Swain had remarked on Monday that Pakistan had infiltrated all aspects of civil society in J&K during the peak of militancy, and that regional parties had cultivated terror leaders for political benefits.

She added that by now The DGP should have been sacked. “In the past 32 months, nearly 50 soldiers have lost their lives,” she said at a press conference in Srinagar on Tuesday. She added, “It’s not mine or former CM Omar Abdullah’s job to stop infiltration at the border.”

Similarly, other political leaders also condemned Swain’s comments. J&K Apni Party chief Altaf Bukhari urged the DGP to focus on his professional duties rather than on political commentary.

Bukhari said, "The DGP is talking more about politics and wants to speak less on security matters. He needs to look professionally and control the situation in the Jammu region.”

National Conference (NC) too accused the police chief’s statements as "inappropriate and insulting to the sacrifices made by their party workers."

Nasir Aslam Wani, a senior NC leader, said, “Only those who plan to engage in politics should give political statements. The National Conference doesn’t need anyone’s certificate.”

Meanwhile, People’s Conference chief Sajad Lone echoed similar sentiments, stating, “Even in a basic democracy, such utterances by a serving police officer would not have been tolerated.”

Senior Congress leader Ghulam Ahmad Mir called upon the Centre to provide answers regarding the rising militancy, pointing out that J&K is directly under its control.
