As part of efforts to develop and preserve the Dharamsala War Memorial, a high-level meeting was held on Wednesday at the War Museum auditorium. The meeting was led by Kangra Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bhairwa. It came after the memorial was praised for its importance during the recent Kargil Vijay Diwas event, where Minister Dhani Ram Shandil spoke highly of its legacy.
Described as “historic and action-oriented,” the meeting brought together key officials to address long-standing issues related to the iconic site, which honours India’s brave soldiers. Among those present were Colonel KKS Dhadwal (War Memorial Committee president), Smart City Commissioner Zafar Iqbal, SDM Mohit Ratan, and other senior officials.
Several important decisions were taken. These included updating land records of the memorial, removing 12 dried trees for safety, starting work on a proposed lake, shifting the current parking area, deploying more Home Guards, and approving projects worth ₹15 lakh.
The DC said that the Dharamsala SDM would decide on the formal transfer of land to the War Memorial Society by August 6. Commissioner Iqbal also promised more support from the Smart City Mission, including benches and solar lights for visitors’ comfort.
A special team was formed to finalise the lake design. Members from the War Memorial Committee, Smart City Mission, and the IPH will be part of it. The BDO was asked to ensure compensation is given for damage caused by the June 2024 forest fire that affected parts of the memorial complex.
