Differently-abled Tuhin aims for space scientist role

Holding pen between lips, youth bags B.Tech degree, refuses job of ₹50 lakh salary per annum to pursue MTech and become a space scientist.

Resident of Malancha village in West Midnapore, Tuhin Dey.

Born in Malancha village in West Midnapore, Tuhin Dey has been facing physical challenges from childhood.

Differently abled Tuhin cannot walk and eat on his own because of paralysed legs and hands.

However, his strong willpower is making him cross milestones.

Tuhin, who had to hold a pen between his lips — given his medical condition — to complete a Bachelor of Technology (BTech) degree in computer science from a premium institute in West Bengal, refused a job offer of ₹50 lakh salary per annum because he wanted to pursue masters.

The youth in his early 20s wants to complete a Master of Technology (MTech) from an IIT institute and become a space scientist.

He secured his position among the top students in the Joint Entrance Examination and enrolled himself in the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur in Howrah.

“After completing BTech, I was offered jobs by a US headquartered bank and a private company with an annual salary of more than ₹50 lakh. But I have miles to go. Now I am preparing myself for the Graduate Aptitude Admission Test in Engineering (GATE) to place myself among the postgraduate students of the IIT, Kharagpur to shape my career path,” asserted Tuhin.

Recounting his journey to become a BTech engineer, Tuhin said he had never taken help from a writer to appear in examinations.

“My non-functional hands and legs gave me the strength to hold the pen between my lips and write. I am also equally comfortable using a computer with a pencil between my lips,” said the son of a small trader, wh expressed gratitude to the invigilators as they helped him to complete his exams on time.

“Whenever I needed to turn over a page of the answer script or question paper, it was them who came forward to help me. Sometimes answer scripts would get dislocated from the writing board, the invigilators would come forward to help me. I never took extra time to finish my answers,” added Tuhin.

Tuhin’s mother Sujata, who is a homemaker, said he prepares to achieve his goal on his own.

“I am to feed him, shower him, take him from one place to another in a wheelchair. But he can lift a pen with his mouth and hold it between his lips on his own,” she said.

Tuhin’s father Samiran Dey said: “My son has proved nothing can stand as a hurdle which can restrict a person to achieve his or her goal. I will do my best to support Tuhin so that he can achieve his goal.”
