Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh claimed on Saturday that the RSS and BJP are emulating the British strategy of dividing Hindus and Muslims to maintain control over India. Singh made the remarks at a press conference held at the Communist Party of India (Marxist) office.
The press briefing also featured leaders from various opposition parties, including Madhya Pradesh CPM Secretary Jaswinder Singh, Samajwadi Party spokesperson Yash Bhartiya, and former state minister Raja Pateria. They had recently conducted a fact-finding mission to Chhatarpur following violence that erupted there on August 21.
Singh, a Rajya Sabha member, alleged that the RSS, Bharatiya Jan Sangh, and BJP have stirred unrest in the country, drawing parallels to the British colonial strategy of sowing division. He also accused the authorities of demolishing the home of a Muslim man in Barwani district—who reportedly has no hands—on charges of stone-pelting.
In 2021, Singh had petitioned the Indore bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court to enforce Supreme Court guidelines aimed at maintaining communal harmony. He criticised the BJP government for not providing a satisfactory response to his petition and welcomed the Supreme Court’s recent comments on "bulldozer justice."
The violence in Chhatarpur, which occurred during a protest by the Muslim community against controversial remarks made by Hindu preacher Ramgiri Maharaj, resulted in several police injuries. The home of the primary accused in the incident was subsequently demolished.
