In a significant development, the Lokpal has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to launch an investigation into the allegations of acquiring disproportionate assets against Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) chief and Rajya Sabha MP Shibu Soren.

The Lokpal's verdict comes after BJP MP Dr. Nishikan Dubey filed a complaint in 2020, alleging that Shibu Soren and his family had amassed assets disproportionate to their known sources of income. Following the complaint, the Lokpal ordered a preliminary investigation by the CBI.

Despite challenging the Lokpal's order in the Delhi High Court, Shibu Soren failed to secure relief as the court upheld the Lokpal's decision. The High Court ruled that the petition could not be entertained, affirming the Lokpal's authority to initiate the investigation.

The Lokpal has instructed the CBI to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations, which is expected to be completed within six months. The CBI is required to submit monthly progress reports to the Lokpal to keep it informed about the progress of the investigation.

Out of the 82 properties listed by the CBI, the Lokpal has mandated the investigation of two specific properties. However, the CBI has been granted autonomy to take necessary actions regarding the remaining 80 properties based on their findings during the preliminary investigation.

The Lokpal's order emphasized that investigations into acquired properties can be initiated within seven years of the complaint being filed, as per the Limitation Act.

It was revealed during the preliminary investigation that the defendants had acquired 80 properties prior to the seven-year period, granting the complainant the option to address these acquisitions through appropriate legal channels.

With this verdict, the spotlight remains on ensuring accountability and integrity in public office, setting a precedent for stringent action against corruption allegations at the highest levels of governance. The outcome of the CBI investigation will be closely monitored, signaling a significant step towards accountability and justice.
