The student wing of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) staged a black flag protest in Chennai against Union Minister of State for Education, Sukanta Majumdar’s visit.
Majumdar was visiting the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-Madras) for an educational event. Originally, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan was supposed to attend, but his plans were canceled at the last moment, according to sources.
The DMK student wing gathered outside the main gate of IIT-Madras, holding black flags to protest against Majumdar. Sources said they planned to block the entire road leading to the institute, but the police stopped them. Instead, they were allowed to protest in a specific area.
During the protest, the students chanted slogans like “We will reject BJP, we will reject NEP.”
One of the protesters said they were demonstrating because the central government was not giving enough funds to Tamil Nadu and was also trying to impose the Hindi language in the state.
For several days, the Tamil Nadu government has been strongly opposing what they claim is the Centre’s attempt to force Hindi on the state through the three-language policy.
The issue worsened when the Union Education Minister refused to release central education funds under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan unless Tamil Nadu implemented the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The DMK student wing said they were determined to raise awareness about these issues affecting Tamil Nadu’s education system.
