A government doctor was stabbed seven times by a patient’s son at the Kalaignar Centenary Super Speciality Hospital in Chennai, reportedly over dissatisfaction with his mother’s treatment.
The accused, identified as Vignesh, confronted Dr Balaji, a renowned oncologist and associate professor at the hospital, in an outpatient (OP) room, where he allegedly attacked the doctor in a fit of rage.
Hospital staff acted swiftly to apprehend the assailant, who was then handed over to the police.
Dr Balaji sustained critical injuries to his neck, chest, head, and stomach, with significant blood loss due to his heart condition and medication.
Emergency treatment included surgery and blood transfusions, with his condition reported as stable but requiring further observation.
According to a hospital official, Vignesh locked the OP room before attacking Dr Balaji, injuring him in multiple areas.
The official added, "He closed the OP room and stabbed the doctor in his neck, behind his ear, chest, forehead, on his back, head and stomach. There was huge blood loss. He is a heart patient and has undergone surgery for his heart ailment."
The official noted that Vignesh’s mother, Kanchana, had undergone six chemotherapy sessions at the hospital. The family later shifted her to a private facility, where they were reportedly informed of lung complications.
It remains unclear what prompted the attack, and investigations are underway.
In response to the incident, government doctors across the state condemned the assault and announced a strike, pressing the government to enhance security for healthcare professionals.
Health Minister Ma Subramanian is expected to meet with representatives to address their concerns.
