A doctor allegedly assaulted a patient at the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla on Monday. The incident triggered public anger after a video of the assault surfaced on social media.
Rahul Rao, Medical Superintendent of the hospital, said action has been initiated against the accused doctor. He added that a detailed report has been sought and further steps will be taken once it is received.
Rao also said the victim has filed a police complaint and an FIR has been registered against the doctor.
In the viral video, the doctor is seen punching a patient who was lying on a hospital bed. The patient is seen trying to defend himself by kicking, while two other people attempt to restrain both of them. The patient suffered an injury to his nose during the incident.
The video was recorded by a person accompanying the patient. After it spread widely on social media, hundreds of people gathered outside the hospital premises to protest against the assault.
As per the victim, who is a resident of Nerwa in Shimla district, he had visited the hospital for an endoscopy. He said a doctor advised him to rest for a few hours after the procedure.
He said he was asked to lie down on an empty bed. While he was resting, the accused doctor arrived and allegedly started misbehaving with him.
The victim claimed that when he asked the doctor to behave respectfully, the doctor assaulted him. However, the accused doctor has claimed that the patient had misbehaved with him first.
Following the incident, patients and local residents staged protests outside the hospital. They demanded strict action against the doctor involved.
